Flying Dishman
Design
The Flying Dishman is a design by Dutch artist and sculptor Joep van Lieshout. It’s a daybed without a front or back. This makes it a versatile object that can be used in various types of situations and places. The unique collaboration between Joep van Lieshout and Weltevree has led to the creation of a circular lounge island with a base made of recycled plastic. Different materials have been tested to produce the Flying Dishman, but the first products will be made from recycled waste containers. These containers are collected at the recycling plant at Van Werven, they sort, clean and roughly grind the containers. In order to be able to use the material for rotational moulding the material is micronized at the production facility to 400 microns. This powder can be used for the production of the Flying Dishman. Due to the constant source of the material and the consistency it’s possible to achieve a high percentage of recycled material in the Flying Dishman while being strong enough to support multiple people. The strength is further improved due to clever engineering of the shape of the bowl and making use of a PE foamed layer behind the outer shell. This also means that the product can be made out of one material which makes it very easy to recycle product again at the end of its life. To make the Flying Dishman more comfortable cushion can be added to it. The cushions are made from the environment friendly Kvadrat Patio textile; “Patio is an upholstery textile developed for outdoors, which offers exceptional colour vibrancy. Designed by Karina Nielsen Rios, it is made with a highly durable, specially developed Trevira CS yarn. A result of 3 years intensive research, Patio features a fluorocarbon-free, environmentally-focused finish, which is water-repellent and fast-drying. It also provides resistance against chlorine, seawater and artificial weathering and is flame-retardant. In addition to its technical features, it also stands out for a soft touch compared to other outdoor fabrics.“ Its name is 3/5 inspired by its comfort and the myth of the Flying Dutchman who had to keep sailing and could not leave his ship. Once you lay down on the Flying Dishman, you’ll never want to leave.
