[Hanhwa-Galleria] Right! OCEAN Campaign: Plastic Dinner / Crispy Rice Collection
Urban and Public Furniture Design
Plastic dinner is an upcycling project focusing on global environmental issues and specifically, ocean plastic. As a part of Hanhwa-Galleria Group’s ‘RIGHT! OCEAN’ campaign, Seungji Mun created amazing pieces in collaboration with WWF. Ocean plastic collected by WWF reproduced into plastic flakes and the crumbs are baked and changed into a piece of artistic furniture by using a process inspired from a traditional recipe of ‘Nurungji’ (Korean Scorched/Crispy Rice). In an industrial oven, plastic flakes are melted and stick to premade metal mould like Nurungji is beautifully baked on the surface of a frying fan. Temperature of melted plastic is decreased and flakes are solidified spontaneously. Finally, the flakes from the ocean have proper structure of furniture. Pollution via ocean plastic causes collapse of the entire marine ecosystem and people eat polluted fish as a result. Plastic dinner conveys a message that we have to think about our ocean to break this vicious circle. All benefits from exhibition and sales of the art pieces are donated to WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature).
