In your face chair
Urban and Public Furniture Design
The ”In your face” chair is made of upcycled plastic from used corona face masks and waste wood. The origin of the idea came during a run where masks were lying all over a park. The idea was then prototyped in a rapid manner with a panini-press and analysis of the components in the composite mask. The idea was then upscaled in terms of prototyping fidelity to larger sheets to test feasibility, and process design is currently under way. From our experiences working with industrial waste plastic, we were cirtain we could develop a new, scalable and robust plastic type from the pandemic waste stream. The chair is a dining chair, a lounge chair and building block designed to be part of a flexible wall, shelf and façade design. The chair is the structure, and the structure is the chair. As a stand alone chair the design is an object measuring 60x60x70 cm. Individually the chair is perceived as an athlete, as a group it is part of a system where the sum of the parts is larger than the number of the individuals. The chair transforms from a dining chair to a cozy lounge chair, simply by flipping it 180 degrees. Plastic is a fantastic material. It is the way we use it and despose it that causes problems. By looking at waste as a resource the design taps into a global waste stream in this case plastic waste and local waste wood and transforms the materials to a potential while giving the concept purpose in both a local and a global context. By utilizing principles from the circular economy, this chair is a way to minimize waste that either goes to landfills, incineration or even the oceans and helps to reduce unnecessary emission of carbon.
