KORAL
Responsible Innovation Projects
Extreme climate change and pollution cause bleaching and death of coral reefs, thisphenomenon kills 50% of coral reefs found in several world islands, especiallyIndonesia. Damage to coral reefs has an impact on the underwater ecosystem. Oneway to anticipate this is to save coral reefs by planting the transplant (microfragmentation) method. KORAL is a medium for transplanting coral reefs in a modularform. The basic material for KORAL consists of processed dead/bleached coral reefsbecause the main materials are easily available on the shore and the fabricationsystem adopts a modular precast system, KORAL can be produced independently atan affordable cost. The selection of the space frame structure as the basis for the shape concept will be avisual attraction for divers and tourists visiting the area. KORAL can support the visualconditions of the underwater landscape without creating the impression of s strangeshape. Besides that, the use of a framework such as a shell will be an attraction formarine life as a place of protection from predators. On a broader scale, KORAL cancreate new ecosystems in areas where coral reefs are completely absent so thatbiodiversity and underwater ecosystems can be preserved.
