Maria – Educational Garden
Urban and Public Design
We designed an educational garden to familiarize kids with vegetable gardens and the growth of plants. We intended to find an easy and entertaining way to introduce kids to nature and the importance of sustainability. We strongly believe in education. We want to contribute to the adoption of more responsible behaviors, including a radical change in the perception of plastic waste, a greater understanding of the environmental emergency, and greater attention to proper waste disposal. As it has a didactic purpose, the dimensions, especially the height, have been designed for children between 6 and 10 years old. In this way, the kids will have easy access to the planters. But we want this not only to be a project for kids but also for families and citizens. This project pretends to promote urban farming and unite communities through the growing of aliments. Our intention is to encourage people to make community kitchens where people meet to plan, cook and share healthy and affordable meals. The planter doesn’t need any complicated installation, plus its modular design makes it easy to adapt to the space. Even the preparation of the educational gardens can involve citizens. They can be part of every stage of the project, from the vase arrangement to the vegetable and fruit collecting. The plastic used is 100% recycled. From car lights to plastic cutlery, this garden gives a second life to all types of plastic waste. After shredding and melting the plastic, with the machines internally developed, we obtain the plastic panels that form our design. The panels are arranged together with a few metallic elements, and a recycled fishing net is used to protect the plants. The fabrication of the furniture is made in collaboration with the interior design studio Izmade. With this design, we aim to amplify the message of sustainability and environmental protection to inspire citizens, especially children, and the younger generations.
